Encapsulation—i.e. the process of enclosing medicine in a capsule— dates back to the early 19th century. There are two main types of capsules: soft shell capsules and hard shell capsules. Early-form soft shell capsules got their start as far back as 1833. From those early roots, it took another century before the modern process for making soft shell capsules was developed.
In comparison, hard shell capsules found their start in about 1847 with the arrival of a patent for capsules in two pieces. Today’s contemporary hard-shell capsules continue to be made of two parts: a smaller “body” that is filled with the medicine or nutritional supplementation, and a larger “cap” which seals it.
